One of his coworkers was an overnight staffer at Friends In Deed’s Bad Weather Shelter. He invited William to join the BWS staff &#8211; and so William, already working full time at Grandview, studying, and with four small children at home, took on several nights a week at the Bad Weather Shelter as well! - [A Crisis Intervention Story - Finding Ways to Communicate](https://friendsindeedpas.org/a-crisis-intervention-story-finding-ways-to-communicate/):     An urgent call came through to the Street Outreach and Housing team from the Food Pantry. A deaf young man had come in, clearly needing help, but unable to communicate his needs. As it happened, two team members were out on the road and swung by the pantry. They began communicating with the young man by writing notes, establishing he was experiencing homelessness and was in desperate need of help. The team called PORT (Pasadena Outreach Response Team) for help. PORT was able to put them in touch with a social worker called Nate, who is fluent in [&hellip;]
- [Lee's Story - Continuing Recovery](https://friendsindeedpas.org/lees-story-continuing-recovery/): Lee had been in sober living for a year, but he timed out of the program without having found a place to live, and he ended up back on the streets, mostly living in his car in safe parking facilities. The Friends In Deed Street Outreach and Housing team became involved, and worked with Lee to get his documents ready for reentry into housing. He was awarded a Section 8 voucher, placed in an apartment in Pasadena, and found work as a pet groomer. Unfortunately, that’s when it all started to go wrong again. He’s extremely intelligent, but many of the executive function tasks other people take for granted &#8211; paying bills, taking out the trash, cleaning the house &#8211; are often beyond him. He had a reputation as an “absent-minded professor” and people forgave his erratic timekeeping, forgetfulness, and haphazard housekeeping. Her first day was totally different to her other job, and initially overwhelming &#8211; but Jenny really needed the money, so she stuck with it. As a member of a homeschooling group, it seemed very natural to Mishele to bring in the homeschooling community. - [Annie's Story - Checking Her Own Stuff at the Door](https://friendsindeedpas.org/annies-story-checking-her-own-stuff-at-the-door/): Annie has a deep connection to the work we do on both a personal and a professional level &#8211; she is studying for a masters degree in social work, but also researches nonprofit organizations for her employer, a local philanthropist. When she first visited us, Annie says that she “fell in love” with Friends In Deed immediately &#8211; especially with The Women’s Room, where she was deeply impressed by how well run it was, by only three staff members! In particular, Wanda lived close to Friends In Deed as a child, supported us and donated items, but never imagined she would need our services herself. She feels that, in a developed country like the US, homelessness and hunger are a tragedy &#8211; and it is this belief that led to her becoming further involved and eventually joining the board just over two years ago. In particular, Ursula appreciates Friends In Deed’s focus on eviction prevention, and the work our Eviction Prevention and Rental Assistance team does in problem solving and helping people learn how to budget and manage their [&hellip;]
- [Kanchi's Story - Profound Connection](https://friendsindeedpas.org/kanchis-story-profound-connection/): By profession, Kanchi is a screenwriter with film production and set skills, but she lost her work during the writers&#8217; strike and that, plus going through a divorce, put her at risk of homelessness. Fortunately her life is now reasonably stable, but this experience has left her with a profound connection to the guests we welcome to The Women’s Room. While she was unemployed, Kanchi was extremely grateful to be accepted onto the Entertainment Community Fund Teaching Artist Program, which due to the strikes was free (sponsored by Sony Pictures). - [Ryan's Story](https://friendsindeedpas.org/ryans-story-helping-the-others/): During the pandemic lockdown, Ryan and his wife found themselves taking walks through the neighborhood to get a break from being cooped up in their apartment. Friends In Deed House was on their regular route, and they became intrigued enough to check us out. From there it wasn’t long before Ryan started volunteering in the Food Pantry. Ryan has a background in disaster mitigation and grants management. The grants management experience was a natural fit for FID, and Ryan accepted a staff position helping us with COVID-related rental assistance. His background in disaster mitigation is not such an obvious match [&hellip;]
- [John's Story - Perspective and Empathy](https://friendsindeedpas.org/johns-story-perspective-and-empathy/): John has a long and distinguished history as a Friends In Deed volunteer. He started helping out as a grant writer in 2009, but soon found a more permanent home in our Food Pantry. For a while, when he was between jobs, he was volunteering full time! These days, he carves out time for us on Wednesdays, taking a regular pantry shift.  In his day job, John is a market research consultant &#8211; a career that involves a strong understanding of people and their behavior. We see that in John’s interactions with our clients &#8211; he treats them with dignity, [&hellip;]
- [A Story of Enabling Dignity](https://friendsindeedpas.org/a-story-of-enabling-dignity/): Our Food Pantry team did an amazing job of adapting the way the pantry ran during the pandemic &#8211; pivoting to offering safe services outside. But there’s no getting around the fact that the temporary system offered our clients less in the way of choice and flexibility than we like to be able to give. One older Asian lady found this particularly difficult. She obviously took pride in what she fed her family, and she preferred fresh food and often didn’t want what was in the pre-packed bags of shelf-stable foods. And, with her consistent presence, we are finding the Hispanic cohort among our TWR guests is growing and blossoming into a supportive sub-community that brightens the program by being there. It started with just one lady. To start with she came only rarely, the language barrier no doubt making things harder for her. They had savings, and were confident that George &#8211; an experienced construction worker &#8211; would soon find a job to support their young family. Unfortunately it didn’t work out like that. The cost of motels burned through their savings, and George was only able to find short-term jobs that paid far less than they needed. She discovered that the family of four were Pasadena natives, living in their car. The family had been experiencing problems for some time &#8211; a combination of life circumstances and a lack of any support from extended family. - [Richard's Story - Put to Work](https://friendsindeedpas.org/richards-story-put-to-work/): About a decade ago, one of chiropractor Dr. Richard Cheung’s patients talked to him about a nonprofit he was involved in. Richard was interested in this nonprofit, particularly in its Bad Weather Shelter program, which was hosted by a church very close to his practice. So his patient invited him along on one of the nights it was operational. Richard says he was put to work immediately &#8211; setting up cots, organizing bags of client belongings, and cooking dinner. He says he was “moved and touched” by the clients he met that night. Some of the ladies would talk for an hour or more, needing the sense of connection they would usually get from in-person visits to TWR. Brooke says she tries to be a kind and nonjudgmental listener. Her makeup, hair, and nails are always absolutely on point (Najwa is known for her glamorously bejeweled nails!), and her clothes coordinate, right down to her shoes and belts. You can already see the attention to clothing and hair in the photo of Najwa as a little girl &#8211; and you would never imagine that between then and now, and not so very many years ago, Najwa was living on the streets and battling substance use. Originally from Tennessee, he has lived all around the greater Los Angeles area and could often be found panhandling outside Cheesecake Factory in Pasadena with his dog, Spot. The bond between Jerry and Spot is very strong &#8211; Jerry will go nowhere without Spot, and Spot is very protective of Jerry. This can sometimes become a problem &#8211; Jerry’s deafness often means you have to talk very loudly, and if Spot thinks you’re yelling at Jerry he will react with [&hellip;]
- [Sophie's Story - Connecting Remotely](https://friendsindeedpas.org/sophies-story-connecting-remotely/): Sophie first became aware of Friends In Deed through her grandmother &#8211; FID Board Secretary Debby Singer! So when it came time to do her Bat Mitzvah project, she chose to do a sock drive for our Street Outreach and Housing team, knowing that clean dry socks are a wonderful gift to people on the street. Sometimes he managed to find seasonal work, and sometimes housing, but never anything permanent. One wet and miserable night he was getting a meal at Pasadena Presbyterian Church when he was told that the church across the road had access to motel rooms during the inclement weather. This, of course, was FID’s Bad Weather Supplies distribution at First United Methodist Church. Richard got in line, and was very happy to not just get a motel room, but also clean, dry socks! These, plus the skyrocketing cost of rent, made it impossible for her to find anywhere to live. She wasn’t prepared to part with her dogs (Arwen and Rebel) to go into a shelter, and she didn’t feel safe at shelters or drop-in centers anyway. It can be easy to think that it matters less, if stressful and difficult things happen to a strong person, because they have the ability to cope with it. Friends In Deed Peer Specialist Angel Maxwell calls this idea out. “Life makes you strong,” she says, because you have to find a way to deal with all the things it throws at you. She saw a message in one of our weekly emails about needing volunteers in the Food Pantry, made contact with Stacey, and joined the team. Then Stacey moved from the Food Pantry to become Director of Eviction Prevention and Rental Assistance, and Emily told her to reach out if she needed help in her new position. Unlike many, Shaughna didn’t believe she would have any trouble leaving &#8211; she knew she had the skills to get a well-paying job. She walked out of the abusive situation in Las Vegas, and came to Pasadena for a fresh start. Exactly as she had predicted, Shaughna quickly found a good job. - [Joan's Story - A Catalyst for a New Beginning](https://friendsindeedpas.org/joans-story-a-catalyst-for-a-new-beginning/): Joan, a single woman in her mid-50s, reached out to our Eviction Prevention and Rental Assistance (EPRA) program when she entered a local sober living facility in Pasadena. Recovering from substance abuse and mental health issues, Joan was afraid that, with limited income, she risked being kicked out of the facility and becoming homeless again. EPRA has worked with the staff at Casa Treatment Center in the past to assist women who are rebuilding their lives. Recovering from a death in the immediate family left Mark unemployed for several months and he fell behind on his rent. By the time he reached out to FID&#8217;s Eviction Prevention and Rental Assistance (EPRA) program to apply for assistance, he was past due on five months of rent and had received a pay or quit notice from his landlord. Reviewing his situation, Marlene learned that Mark had just secured permanent employment and was only asking EPRA to assist him in paying down his arrears [&hellip;]

She had the television on and the screen caught her eye in time to watch in horror as the second plane hit the Twin Towers. She went to church to pray, and emerged with the conviction that she had to do something to make the world a little less awful than it seemed at that moment. She was living nearby and noticing the buzz of activity around our building, so she googled the address to find out what we do, and the rest is history. Even after moving away to Michigan for a year, she emailed Tim as soon as she returned to Pasadena to get her old shifts back. When she is working her shifts, Claudia tries to connect with the pantry clients as much as possible. It helps that she is bilingual, so she often helps people to [&hellip;]

Kyle was helped by our Eviction Prevention and Rental Assistance team a while back &#8211; we were able to tide him over a difficult period by helping him with a deposit on a new place to live. Our Eviction Prevention program is geared toward short-term assistance to get someone back on their feet. - [Tammy's Story - Remarkably Efficient](https://friendsindeedpas.org/tammys-story-remarkably-efficient/): Tammy was living with her daughter until her daughter got a Section 8 voucher to help with housing costs, which meant that she could no longer have a sub-tenant. Tammy relies on her own earnings to make ends meet &#8211; she has been denied Social Security &#8211; and those earnings are not enough to pay for housing. Fortunately Tammy does still have a job, and her son has been allowing her to sleep in his car while he was at work. Sometimes the best we can hope for is “happier than it might have been.” Our Substance Abuse Specialist, Olivia, had lost track of one of her clients &#8211; something that can easily happen with the sector of the population she works with. So when Jane let Olivia know that this client &#8211; Elaine &#8211; had turned up at The Women’s Room, Olivia went straight over there. Elaine was not looking well. Along with her volunteering at Friends In Deed, Carolie was teaching a sculpture class with Art Division, a non-profit organization dedicated to training and supporting underserved youth who are committed to studying the visual arts. - [Merria's Story - Always a Cheerleader!](https://friendsindeedpas.org/merrias-story-always-a-cheerleader/): Merria is the youngest of seven children in an athletic family and much of her childhood was spent going from one sporting event to another, cheering on her older siblings. In her current position as Director of Development, Merria sees much of her role as being a cheerleader &#8211; in fact, being the biggest cheerleader, not only for FID as an organization, but also for all the members of the FID community. - [Ransome's Story - Being Community Minded](https://friendsindeedpas.org/ransomes-story-being-community-minded/): With a good job as a probation officer, Ransome had a stable life. Unfortunately, after taking sabbatical leave, he had problems getting his job back. Without an income, the challenges posed by the bureaucracy of the system became insurmountable and the inevitable homelessness that followed only made things worse. Ransome tried multiple agencies to try and get back on his feet, but had no luck. He developed a substance abuse issue and had to overcome that before he could move forward. Eventually, however, he started to get his life back together enough to manage some short periods of employment. Meanwhile [&hellip;]
- [Julius's Story - Able to Contribute Again](https://friendsindeedpas.org/juliuss-story-able-to-contribute-again/): As happened with so many people during the stay-at-home order at the beginning of the pandemic, Julius found his primary relationships came under great strain. His girlfriend continued to work as a cosmetologist, and this meant a steady stream of clients visiting their home. Not only did the risk make Julius uncomfortable, but he also felt he was an unwelcome presence in his partner’s business. Eventually Julius was able to go back to work, but the damage to the relationship was done. When he found himself out of work once more, his partner lost patience and told him to leave. [&hellip;]
- [A Pantry Story - Diversity and Community](https://friendsindeedpas.org/a-pantry-story-diversity-and-community/): We have a very diverse pantry community. The three main languages spoken by our pantry community are English, Spanish, and Mandarin. We will also regularly hear Armenian, Korean, and Arabic to list a few more. It is fun to watch our community as they wait for their turn to pick up food. As one would expect, people will often congregate with other people that speak the same language or come from the same neighborhood. But they will also become friends with people they see regularly and have come to know. The community will also help &#8220;newcomers&#8221; find their way through [&hellip;]

She had moved into a condo but desperately missed her garden. Her husband refused to consider moving again, so she had to think creatively &#8211; and a community garden was the result! Her friend had a puppy she couldn’t keep and, rather than have the dog put down, Brenda had offered to take her. Now, along with all the challenges of living on the streets, Brenda had the extra challenge of caring for a dog. She wasn’t completely opposed to trying to rehome the dog, but Brenda said the puppy brought her peace and comfort and, even though she was tiny, she also brought a sense of security &#8211; because even the smallest dog will bark [&hellip;]
- [Marlene's Story - A Strong Relationship](https://friendsindeedpas.org/marlenes-story/): Friends In Deed board member Marlene Pomeroy and her husband, Jake, moved to Pasadena 24 years ago to become co-pastors of the First Congregational Church, Pasadena. Marlene, as a new pastor, was soon invited to connect with Friends In Deed in planning the annual interfaith Thanksgiving service. A lot has changed since that time! Friends In Deed has grown massively and now places a greater emphasis on social services than on acting as an interfaith council. - [Eva's Story - Having the Tools She Needs](https://friendsindeedpas.org/evas-story-having-the-tools-she-needs/): When she was a child, Eva’s beloved dog would wait for her by the mailboxes at the end of her road and run to her when he saw her coming home from school. This began a lifelong love of dogs and a deep appreciation for their companionship and the joy they bring. - [A Pantry Story - A Devoted Friend](https://friendsindeedpas.org/a-pantry-story-a-devoted-friend/): A volunteer came into the Food Pantry to report that someone had passed out in front of Friends In Deed House. Food Pantry Manager Stacey went to check, and discovered a man sprawled on one of our benches, his dog standing guard beside him. She tried to wake him but he was barely responsive and she called 911. When they arrived, the paramedics asked Friends In Deed to watch the dog until animal control could arrive. The dog, however, did not cooperate! After the paramedics refused to let it in the ambulance, the dog raced away up Los Robles with [&hellip;]
- [Sherry's Story - Determined to Finish School](https://friendsindeedpas.org/sherrys-story-determined-to-finish-school/): We’re not sure whether or not Buddy is an official emotional support animal, but he certainly goes everywhere that Sherry goes, and we’re sure plays a major role in keeping her calm and centered in her everyday life. A student at a local college, Sherry has no family support or financial resources, but she’s determined to complete her degree. Our Eviction Prevention and Rental Assistance Program was able to help her move out of a very bad housing situation in 2021, and then this year we were approached by Sherry’s landlord as Sherry was having trouble covering her rent. - [Gloria's Story - Sleeping in the Park](https://friendsindeedpas.org/glorias-story-sleeping-in-the-park/): Gloria, a senior, was illegally evicted from her apartment. With no other resources to fall back on &#8211; other members of her family are also unhoused or not in a position to offer help &#8211; she ended up on the streets of Downtown LA. Not surprisingly, this terrified her. She came to Pasadena and established herself in Pasadena’s Central Park. Even other unhoused folks were horrified to see a 71-year-old woman sleeping in the park. They started to help her get connected with resources, telling her about The Women’s Room, where she was able to get showers and laundry, and [&hellip;]
- [Nicole's Story - Escaping Exploitation](https://friendsindeedpas.org/nicoles-story-escaping-exploitation/): Nicole turned up at The Women’s Room dragging an enormous suitcase behind her and with nowhere to go that night. She had been sleeping in her car, but it had broken down and the local residents had it towed away. A vulnerable young woman, she really wasn&#8217;t the kind of person we wanted to leave to the mercies of the streets, and we certainly couldn&#8217;t send her back to her very abusive and exploitative family. - [Pepper and Lindsey's Story - Old Friends](https://friendsindeedpas.org/pepper-and-lindseys-story/): Pepper &#8211; the “Mayor of Skid Row” &#8211; is a charismatic and well-known figure in downtown Los Angeles. FID staff member Lindsey got to know him ten years ago, when she used to make weekly trips to Skid Row with her family to give out food and supplies. A determined individualist and fiercely independent, Pepper was adamant about not receiving any help, but he and Lindsey did become very good friends.&nbsp; Fast forward to the present &#8211; a ten-year-old photo of Lindsey and Pepper popped up on Lindsey’s Facebook feed, reminding her of what started her on the route towards [&hellip;]
- [Elaine's Story - Carrying On Through Many Changes](https://friendsindeedpas.org/elaines-story-carrying-on-through-many-changes/): As a long-time volunteer in the Food Pantry, Elaine has seen a lot of changes. She remembers when money was desperately tight, when we relied on volunteers’ own cars for picking up bulk food donations, and when Tim had to rush out to buy the cheapest possible hotdogs just so we would have some kind of protein to put in people’s shopping bags. She remembers some of the funky donations we used to get &#8211; an enormous bag of chicken that had been allowed to defrost by the donor and had to be distributed in record time because its safe [&hellip;]

Many organizations do. But one of the things that FID board member Nishanthi Kurukulasuriya values about her involvement with Friends In Deed is that FID does try to find a balance between expedience and the kind of demanding compassion that is needed to work with a more challenging client. At the time of his move to LA, Tim did not think the values he had been exposed to at his Mennonite high school and college had made much of a lasting impact on him. It was only after living in LA and seeing at first hand the endemic racism and social injustice in the city, and then being forced to resign from a job after protesting against his employer’s cruelty to animals, that he decided he needed to do [&hellip;]

She lost loved ones, she was involved in traumatic family situations, she became depressed, and she was struggling to hold down a job. She had friends who were willing to help, but she felt bad putting so much weight on them, so she “stepped out on her own” and began living on the streets. - [Cheynelle's Story - A Change in Perspective](https://friendsindeedpas.org/cheynelles-story-a-change-in-perspective/): Cheynelle has always valued her freedom. She rebelled against her adopted family and chose a life outside conventional society, living for a while in a shelter on the side of an LA freeway. However, Cheynelle became a mother, and with that came a change of perspective. She says she was a “grown-ass child” herself, unprepared for the responsibilities of parenthood. Her children are being well looked after by others and Cheynelle still gets to see them nearly every day, but she still feels the pain of separation. She has served on the boards of local nonprofits, and she and her girl scout troop have made hygiene kits for Friends In Deed’s Street Outreach Team. But it was helping with FID’s Back to School event that really gave Vicki the Friends In Deed bug! She says it is the hands-on aspect of the work that makes it so fulfilling. - [A Pantry Client's Story - Christmas Cheer](https://friendsindeedpas.org/a-pantry-clients-story-christmas-cheer/): A week before Christmas, one of our clients had picked up food from the FID Food Pantry. On Christmas Day, she noticed a homeless gentleman on her porch, leaving and then returning. This happened throughout the day. She went about her day and decided to cook some food, for herself and this gentleman if he was around when it was done. As luck would have it, he was. She went around the side of her house and presented him with a plate of homemade food. He accepted it and then left. She said it was like he knew that this [&hellip;]
- [Barbara's Story - From Receiving Services to Giving Service](https://friendsindeedpas.org/barbaras-story-from-receiving-services-to-giving-service-2/): Barbara was living in a homeless shelter in 2007 when she first saw a flyer for The Women’s Room. She says the encouragement, acceptance, and understanding that she found there were things she really needed at the time. It was through the help of the shelter she was living in that Barbara managed to get a Section 8 voucher, but it was through the tireless advocacy of Friends In Deed that she actually found a place to live. - [Robert's Story - Living in a Garage](https://friendsindeedpas.org/roberts-story-struggling-with-ill-health/): It took a long time and a lot of money before Robert was diagnosed with Parkinson&#8217;s Disease. He was refused disability and by the time he finally got a diagnosis he had been made homeless and worn out the hospitality of all the friends and family who had been letting him couch surf. After a stay in hospital he was housed in a recuperative facility and then a transitional house, but he was choked and threatened with a knife by his co-tenants and moved out to live in someone’s garage. Fortunately at this point Robert got in touch with Friends [&hellip;]
- [Kyneisha's Story - Struggling with a Rent Increase](https://friendsindeedpas.org/kyneishas-story/): Kyneisha was first referred to Friends In Deed from Elizabeth House where she had spent time as a soon-to-be mother. After having her baby boy and graduating their program, Kyneisha moved out to Monrovia and began working a steady job at a local hardware store. By this point she was no longer getting any financial assistance from Elizabeth House, but was continuing to get help in the form of case management.
