A Message from Rabbi Joshua Levine Grater – Week ending August 18, 2017

“Dear FID Community,

This is a bittersweet week in our office as we say ‘bon voyage,’ to Marty, who is moving back to Cincinnati- today is her last day here is Pasadena. We are thrilled that shes is staying on staff as our Director of Grants and Administration. We wish her and Bart only the best on their journey….

A Message from Rabbi Joshua Levine Grater – Week ending August 11, 2017

“Dear FID Community,

We are beginning some significant staff transitions! This week, we welcome our new Office Manager, Viri Mata, who will be handling day-to-day operations, bookkeeping, as well as assisting me. Next week we will say ‘so long!’ to Marty, who is moving back to Cincinnati. Her last day in the office is next Friday. Thankfully, Marty will be staying with FID, working remotely, part-time, as Director of Grants and Administration. She will remain an integral part of our staff, and I am so grateful. She will be in the office several times a year as well. Stop by next week to say ‘bon voyage!’….

“Dear FID Community,

As we enter into Memorial Day weekend, let us remember those who gave their lives in service to our country, and for us at FID, take note of the large numbers of veterans that are homeless on our streets.  May those who served be remembered for a blessing and may their families find comfort and strength in their memories….

A Message from Rabbi Joshua Levine Grater – Week ending May 12, 2017

“Dear FID Community,

What an exciting time for us, as we expand and extend our services to those most vulnerable in our community. We are growing both financially and communally, so we are able to take on more and more of the great responsibility we have in Pasadena to care for our homeless and at-risk men, women and children.  We are grateful for all of you who have been supporting us for years, and thrilled with the many new folks that are interested in volunteering and helping. Friends in Deed, thanks to all of you, and our amazing staff and board, is in a strong upward trajectory….

John E. Kobara Keynote Address, “Comforting the Afflicted and Afflicting the Comfortable”, from 2017 Mayor’s Interfaith Prayer Breakfast

“I’d like to thank Richard Cheung and Friends In Deed for the extraordinary work they do, and thanks to Mayor Tornek for the invitation to be here, for your leadership, and vision for a better Pasadena. And thank you—all of you—for coming here today and spending your valuable time to be together; and to express our unity, connection to one another.

I’m here to be a little bit of a catalyst, a little bit of verbal caffeine, a little bit of a wake-up call, about things you already know, things that are already inside of you—things that we need to stir. My job today is just to shift your perspective a little bit, to consider again, how do we build a better community….”

“Dear Friends,

What a glorious morning we had yesterday at the Mayor’s Interfaith Prayer Breakfast!  Thank you to the nearly 600 who attended, sharing in community, music, prayer and fellowship. We were inspired and challenged by our phenomenal keynote speaker, John Kobara.  The morning ended with a community prayer led by all the clergy up in front, and then our youth ushered us out with beautiful music.  This is what makes Pasadena such a great place to live….

“Dear Friends in Deed community,

This is Holy Week for our Christian brothers and sisters and Passover week for our Jewish brothers and sisters. In the spirit of the season, we were able to bring both holidays into FID this week. On Wednesday, one of the regular volunteers, Anat Bruck, not only made all the food for a model Passover Seder, but she set up a beautiful table for the women of TWR….

A Message from Rabbi Joshua Levine Grater – Lots of Activity

“Dear FID Community and Friends,

What a week we had at Friends in Deed! On Sunday morning, I had the pleasure of preaching three sermons at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, and Richard and I were honored to receive a $6,000 check from the church’s Christmas tree sale. The youth group also prepared toiletries for TWR and spent time talking with Richard about Friends in Deed. On Monday, a holiday, members of our development committee, chaired by Kathy Simpson, spent three hours thinking and strategizing on our plan for the year to increase fundraising and outreach in the community. We had school groups here helping in the pantry and lots of activity….

A Message from Rabbi Joshua Levine Grater – Busy Week

“Dear Friends in Deed Family and Friends,

We had a wonderfully busy week here at FID. We had nearly 50 people on Thursday morning for an Open House breakfast to meet me and see what is happening at Friends in Deed. We had community leaders, city council field reps, volunteers and several brand new people!  Myself and Richard spoke and welcomed people, and I gave a tour of our facility and talked about the great programs. Thanks to Rev. Donna for her awesome and generous food set-up. Look for an article in the Pasadena Star News in the next few days….
