Volunteer at Friends In Deed

Thank you for your interest in volunteering with Friends In Deed.  Volunteers are the life-force behind our organization.  They support our lean staff in assisting our clients, providing services and helping our organization run smoothly. Whatever your passion is, we want to give it a home here at Friends In Deed.

Current Volunteer Opportunities

The Food Pantry is currently seeking volunteers to help with our new Thursday Food Distribution.  Our Food Pantry is set up like a “neighborhood” grocery store with community folks in-need selecting the food items they want based on family size and what we’ve received for that week.  There are opportunities to interact with our community and also work behind the scenes. Responsibilities include, but may not be limited to:

  • Thursday operating hours are from 9:00 AM until 1:30 PM on Thursdays. We are looking for volunteers that can stay for the entire 4 ½ hours or for 2 ½ hour stints – either from 9:00 AM to 11:30 AM or 11:00 AM to 1:30 PM
  • Preparing the Food Pantry for opening. This includes bagging produce, stocking refrigerators, filling tables with food, and
  • Sorting through our Trader Joe’s donations, putting the necessary foods in the refrigerators/freezers, bagging produce, disposing of rotten, open, molding or expired foods, etc.
  • Re-stock shelves with shelf-stable foods on a first-in/first-out basis as needed
  • Greeting, interacting, and assisting our community as they visit the Pantry
  • Maintaining cleanliness of pantry floor and storage rooms
  • Helping to unload donations, as they arrive, and issue receipts for donors
  • Breaking down boxes for recycling

If you are interested in this volunteering opportunity, please contact Tim Nistler, Food Pantry Program Director, by email at pantry@friendsindeedpas.org or by phone at 626-797-6072

The Women’s Room (TWR) is seeking Hostess volunteers for various shifts during the week.  As a volunteer in TWR, it is very important that we treat the guests (ladies) as you would any guest in your own home, make them feel welcomed, wanted, and accepted just as they are. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Greet ladies as they arrive
  • Engage in conversation with the ladies and encourage other volunteers to as well
  • Listen attentively and empathetically, without advice or judgement
  • Assist with, and respond to, special needs expressed by guests
  • Replenish the food and snack table as needed
  • Help clean TWR at the close of the afternoon. This includes:
    • putting away leftover food
    • washing & drying dishes
    • wiping down tables and counters
    • sweeping floor
    • making sure to unplug or turn off coffee makers, toasters, crockpots, etc.

Most importantly, remember that as a volunteer, it is our duty to brighten the ladies’ day, make them feel as if they are at home, and contribute to building their confidence and sense of community. If you are interested in volunteering, or have any questions regarding the days and times, please contact Marlene Martinez, The Women’s Room Program Director, at 626-797-2402 or by email, at twr@friendsindeedpas.org.
