Volunteer at Friends In Deed

Thank you for your interest in volunteering with Friends In Deed.  Volunteers are the life-force behind our organization.  They support our lean staff in assisting our clients, providing services and helping our organization run smoothly. Whatever your passion is, we want to give it a home here at Friends In Deed.

Current Volunteer Opportunities

The Women’s Room (TWR) is currently seeking Hostess volunteers to help with Tuesday afternoon shifts, from 12:45 PM to 4:15 PM, beginning Tuesday, June 6. As a volunteer in TWR, it is very important that we treat the guests (ladies) as you would any guest in your own home, make them feel welcomed, wanted, and accepted just as they are. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Greet ladies as they arrive
  • Engage in conversation with the ladies and encourage other volunteers to as well
  • Listen attentively and empathetically, without advice or judgement
  • Assist with, and respond to, special needs expressed by guests
  • Replenish the food and snack table as needed
  • Help clean TWR at the close of the afternoon. This includes:
    • putting away leftover food
    • washing & drying dishes
    • wiping down tables and counters
    • sweeping floor
    • making sure to unplug or turn off coffee makers, toasters, crockpots, etc.

Most importantly, remember that as a volunteer, it is our duty to brighten the ladies’ day, make them feel as if they are at home, and contribute to building their confidence and sense of community. If you are interested in volunteering, or have any questions, please contact Marlene Martinez, The Women’s Room Program Director, at 626-797-2402 or by email, at twr@friendsindeedpas.org.

The Food Pantry is currently seeking volunteer drivers to pick-up food donations from Smart & Final, on Fair Oaks Ave. in Pasadena.  The exact days of the pickup are not yet set, but most likely the days will be Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays mornings.  The time will probably be around 8:00 AM.  It is not necessary to pick up all three days, but we are looking for a weekly commitment for whichever day(s) you are interested in.  Responsibilities include, but may not be limited to:

  • Use your own vehicle and have a valid Driver’s License and auto insurance
  • Fill out the Extra Helpings Donation Receipt (get copies from Food Pantry Program Director) at the time of pickup. On the Receipt, it is necessary to indicate the product(s) department/type (Bakery, Dairy, Meat, Etc.) and total pounds received. The receipt is to be signed off by Friends In Deed volunteer, conducting the pickup, and Smart & Final representative.  The “White Copy” goes to the Smart & Final representative and the “Canary Copy” comes to Friends In Deed.
  • Loading, most likely, 4-5 shopping carts full miscellaneous food
    • meat, deli, dairy, bakery, and general merchandise items (non-food items, pet food, cleaning products, paper, etc.)
  • Must be able to lift 30 lbs
  • Arrive at Smart & Final at the appointed time
  • Deliver food to Friends In Deed (located at 444 E. Washington Blvd) and help unload it

Each pick up is likely to take no more than a hour commitment.  If you are interested in this volunteering opportunity, please contact Tim Nistler, Food Pantry Program Director, at 626-797-6072 or by email, at pantry@friendsindeedpas.org.
